Free Web Site Traffic
Website Optimization Secrets
How many ways are there to get free web
site traffic? I don't know, but this week I'll tell you about
some of them. Hopefully there will be one or two ways here that
you haven't yet tried. Feel free to email me at stevegillman@themoneymakersite.com
if you want to add to the list.
1. Search engine submissions. The obvious
one, right? You can submit to 20 at once for free at www.freewebsubmission.com. Submit manually to
Google (www.google.com/addurl.html).
2. Directories. You can search for niche
directories for the topic of your website, and I'll have a list
of free general directories in an upcoming issue. The primary
value of directories is not direct traffic, however. It is the
links that help your ranking (and therefore traffic) with the
search engines.
3. Forums. Covered in the last issue, these
can be a great source of traffic for some sites. You may want
to link to subscription pages for newsletters or e-courses you
offer, to get maximum repeat visits from the traffic.
4. Free classified ads. There are many
places that you can advertise for free, but only a few of them
seem to be of any value. I'll let you know which have worked
for me in a coming issue.
5. Link exchanges. Exchanging links with
other sites can get you free traffic in two ways. First, you
may get traffic from the site, and second, the link will help
your placement in, and traffic from the search engines.
6. Posting paper ads. I've seen more people
posting ads for web sites on bulletin boards, telephone poles
and at bus stops lately. I don't know if this is worth the time
or not.
7. Testimonials. If you loved an e-book
or other online product, tell the author. Let her know that she
can use your testimonial, and that you'd appreciate it if she
left the link to your site (under your name) active. Good testimonials
are valuable, and you've probably seen them with a name and link
attached.
8. Articles. This is a great way to generate
free traffic. I'll cover this in depth soon. I'll also let you
know which ten article banks have generated the most traffic
for me.
9. Start a blog. Post your thoughts, news
and products, and always have a link to your site. Blogger.com will get you started for free, and
Pingomatic
will notify the major blog directories of your existence.
10. Post comments in other's blogs. Many
blogs have a "comments" section, and allow you to post
a message. Sales pitches are usually frowned on, but a link to
your site under your name is usually okay.
11. Start your own affiliate program. It's
hard to do this one free at first (but possible), but once you
have it set up, you only pay out of your sales.
12. Add content. You can get free content
from article banks. You have to leave the author's link active,
but it won't matter if you lose a few visitors to that, if the
new page brings in visitors. You can also write your own pages,
of course.
13. Submit press releases. There are several
good places online that distribute your press releases for free.
I'll have a list for you soon. If you add a new section to your
web site - time for a press release!
14. Opt-in newsletters and courses. Have
a newsletter or e-course on your site, and once someone signs
up for them, they have to return repeatedly.
15. Distribute a free e-book. This works
especially well if you have several related web sites. The idea
is to sell or give away the book (probably in PDF format) and
have several links in it to your site. You can even let other
web masters give it away as a free gift.
16. Pay per click search engines. Free?
Sometimes the new ones offer $20 worth of free traffic just to
get you to try them. I signed up for one that gave me $100 to
start. I'll cover this in a future issue too.
17. Domain type-ins. A name like "cars.com"
is sure to get free "type in" traffic, but who can
afford names like that? What you can do, is to see if there are
".nets" that are active, without the ".com"
registered. Register the .com version. A popular .net site will have people
typing in .com by mistake all the time, and as long as your site
is relevant, you can capitalize on that traffic.
18. Have an interesting site. In the early
days of the net, the primary way sites got incoming links was
just through other web masters wanting to tell there visitors
about a site. This still happens.

traffic with it.
