Keyword Optimization - Part 2

Website Optimization Secrets

Once you've got the content of the pages keyword optimized, you need to do something with your Meta tags. If you go to the "view" option on your browser right now, and click it, then select and click on "source mode," or "source," or "view source," you'll see the HTML code for this page. Near the top you'll see the following:

<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="keyword optimization, web site optimization,image tags">
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Web Site Optimization Secrets - Keyword Optimization Part 2, and how to use image tags to get traffic.">

These are meta-tags. The keyword tag was once used to trick search engines, so they are mostly ignored now. Nonetheless, put your primary keywords here, including plural and singular forms and synonyms - as long as they actually appear on your page. Keep it to less than 10 keywords.

The description tag is still displayed by many search engines, so write it carefully. Being on the first page of results won't help if they don't click through to your site, so tease and entice the reader, but don't make it sound like a sales pitch. If you do, some directories won't display it. Include the primary keyword at least once in the description, and keep it to 150 characters or less.

Image Tags

Look at the source code of a page that has a photo or graphic, and you'll see something like this:

<IMG SRC="little-pink-house.jpg" ALT="Little Pink House in Montana"
ALIGN="BOTTOM" WIDTH="360" HEIGHT="243" BORDER="0">

"ALT= " is where you can "name" the image. This is from my site, HousesUnderFiftyThousand.com. If you go there and put your cursor over the photo, you'll see a little box pop up that says "Little Pink House In Montana." I get traffic from searches for "little pink house," and "house in montana," especially from Googles "Image Search." ( In the "referrers" section of your traffic reports, you'll see something like : http://images.google.ca/imgres)

If you are going to have a photo or graphic anyhow, put an "alt-img" tag in there. On one of my outdoor sites, I consistently get traffic because of the photos. Even when I don't show in the regular results for "Mount Shasta" I get traffic from people searching for photos of Mount Shasta. The best part? I didn't pay a thing for the photos. One of the places you can get free photos is sxc.hu.

Next Time: Traffic from talking.
